Future Skills Development

Future Skills Development

iLAuNCH will address the skills shortage in the space technology sector by co-designing a comprehensive education and training program spanning from higher education to vocational courses to executive education to schools.

iLAuNCH has teamed up with advanced materials and manufacturing training centres to deliver tailored apprenticeships and training programs suited to the space manufacturing industry, with downstream benefits to the aerospace industry.

Job-ready skills will be developed for the space sector. By facilitating career pathways into Space Engineering, we will draw upon the educational expertise from each university partner, and key industry partners. This will support outreach and enable activities from STEM in schools (Year 3-12), through to micro-credentialling, and tertiary studies in the form of a Space Engineering Degree to industry PhD pathways.

Micro-credential pathways for Industry, Educators and Students

Each university partner currently invests in micro-credentialing and will build on existing platforms and production expertise to expand on the needs of the growing Australian Space sector. A series of micro-credentials will be co-designed with industry partners to address immediate skill shortages in the Space Manufacturing sector.

Bachelor of Space Engineering (Honours)

The University consortium currently offers a Bachelor of Science (Astronomical & Space Sciences) (UniSQ), Graduate Certificate in Space Studies (UniSA), Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (UniSA), and Space Law and Governance (ANU). Currently, a dedicated Bachelor of Space Engineering (Honours) is not offered in Australia. The iLAuNCH university partners will address this gap to prepare job-ready graduates that meet current and future industry needs.

Each core university will contribute courses to the degree in areas that align with their research strengths. The courses will be developed in partnership with key industry partners to ensure industry relevance. This degree will be co-designed by and co-delivered across UniSQ, ANU and UniSA. The geographic spread of this program with a node in each state and territory (QLD, ACT, SA) allows for greater reach to capture students from regional areas around each node.

Research pathway for Space Engineering

The Hub will support PhD students working on industry directed projects, allowing PhD graduates to transition to industry due to their job-ready skills. Industry have expressed the desire for their staff to undertake PhD studies, providing exposure to novel manufacturing techniques currently not available to industry. This provides the optimal opportunity for exchange and translation of university research to industry through a direct pipeline. The Hub will also facilitate industry-based internships, ensuring highly valued and job-ready graduates.
