iLAuNCH commits $3 million to accelerate Australian space commercialisation

New Commercial Development Fund and industry workshop to strengthen pathways to market and Australia’s sovereign space capability

The iLAuNCH Trailblazer is accelerating the next phase of Australian space innovation, committing $3 million through a new Commercial Development Fund (CDF) to advance technologies towards market readiness and strengthen Australia’s sovereign space capability.

As the program enters its final phase, the competitive fund will support existing iLAuNCH industry and university partners to build on research and development achievements, overcome barriers to commercialisation and unlock new opportunities for Australian-made space technologies.

The fund’s Expression of Interest period closed on 22 October 2026, with applications now progressing through the assessment process.

The initiative represents a strategic investment in the long-term commercial success of technologies developed through iLAuNCH, supporting activities including product demonstration and qualification, advanced technical development, manufacturing readiness, intellectual property commercialisation and regulatory approval pathways.

iLAuNCH Interim Executive Director, Professor Emeritus Andrew Smith, said the fund was an important step in ensuring the program’s research and industry partnerships deliver enduring benefits for Australia.

“As we enter the final eighteen months of the iLAuNCH Trailblazer program, our focus turns towards building on the progress achieved and ensuring our projects deliver lasting commercial outcomes and sovereign capability for Australia,” Professor Smith said.

“Through this $3 million investment, we have an opportunity to build on the technologies already developed, address critical barriers to market entry and support our partners in taking the next steps towards commercial success.

“Our industry and academic partners have been instrumental in bringing iLAuNCH to this point. Their expertise, leadership and collaboration will be equally important as we look towards the next chapter and consider how the technologies and capabilities developed through the program can achieve their greatest commercial impact.”

Building on this momentum, iLAuNCH will bring together university Chief Investigators, industry partners, commercialisation teams, Advisory Board members and its Technical Advisory Panel of Experts for a two-day Commercialisation Workshop on 9–10 November 2026.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for project teams to present their progress, share insights and explore new pathways to market, with collaborative discussions focused on identifying commercial opportunities, strengthening partnerships and maximising the impact of iLAuNCH-supported technologies.

“Over the two days of the workshop, we will bring together the collective expertise of our researchers, industry partners and commercialisation specialists to identify where we can make the greatest difference,” Professor Smith said.

“This is an opportunity to recognise what we have achieved together, explore new opportunities for collaboration and shape a lasting legacy beyond the life of the program.

“Ultimately, our success will be measured not only by the technologies we have developed, but by their ability to create lasting commercial value, strengthen Australian industry and contribute to our nation’s sovereign capability.”

Led by the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), in partnership with the Australian National University (ANU) and Adelaide University (previously the University of South Australia), the iLAuNCH Trailblazer brings together university researchers and industry partners to accelerate the commercialisation of advanced space and aerospace technologies.

Through its portfolio of commercialisation projects, iLAuNCH is advancing Australian capabilities across additive manufacturing, advanced materials, hypersonics, rocket technologies, satellites, communications and sensors.

The $3 million Commercial Development Fund and upcoming workshop reinforce iLAuNCH’s commitment to translating Australian research into commercially viable products, services and technologies, ensuring the program’s impact continues well beyond its completion.
