Exploring the final frontier in law

“Space and mountains both call us to explore the unknown, pushing us to climb higher and unlock mysteries that expand our understanding of the world and beyond.”

For law students with a passion for space, the opportunity to combine legal expertise with the growing space industry offers an exciting and unique career path. The intersection of law and space presents a dynamic field that involves international governance, complex legal frameworks, and groundbreaking technological innovations. Zamara Rodríguez shares her journey from studying international relations and law to working in the aerospace sector, demonstrating just how varied and fulfilling a career in this emerging field can be.

Starting with a solid foundation in international law, Zamara gained a deep understanding of global governance systems and how they apply to various sectors. Over time, her interest evolved, and she became increasingly fascinated by the legal challenges posed by technology and space. Having recently completed a Master’s Degree in International Law and Diplomacy at The Australian National University in Canberra, Zamara further strengthened her expertise in the legal, policy, and diplomatic aspects of space.

This curiosity led her to explore further opportunities in the aerospace sector, where she now serves as the Program Manager for the AYAA ASTRA Program, providing tertiary students and young professionals with an opportunity to learn about important issues in the Australian space industry. Zamara also gained valuable experience in an interim role as an Executive Assistant with the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA). It was at SIAA that she saw the opportunity to apply for the Milo Mission Academy for Lunar Exploration.

Zamara shares her Milo Mission Academy for Lunar Exploration experiences:

It caught my eye right away since I’ve always been interested in space and the opportunity to get involved in something like lunar exploration. I thought it would be a great chance to learn more and applied as soon as I saw it!

My career is not solely focused on program management — I also advocate for diversity and inclusion in the space industry through my role as co-lead of the Gender Equality Group within the Space Generation Advisory Council.

My long-term career goal is to work with companies involved in space missions, where I can apply my project management experience, legal background, and the technical insights I’ve gained through programs like this one. I’m eager to contribute to projects that push the boundaries of space exploration and make a real impact in the sector.

Expanding opportunities in lunar exploration

My legal and managerial expertise came into play when I applied for and was accepted into the prestigious Australian Milo Mission Academy for Lunar Exploration, in partnership with AROSE sponsored by the iLAuNCH Trailblazer. This program offered a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the technical and operational aspects of space missions, particularly lunar exploration. The chance to work on a lunar mission, learn about the technologies involved, and engage with experts in the field was an unparalleled experience.

Despite my legal background, the program provided excellent training in mission planning, operations, and the role that Australia and the US play in global space exploration. One of the key takeaways from the program was the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Legal professionals working in space must not only understand the regulatory frameworks but also have a grasp of the technical and scientific challenges involved in space missions.

Bridging the gap: Law and Technology in space

Space exploration is a collaborative effort that requires input from legal experts, engineers, scientists, and project managers. Throughout the program, I worked closely with professionals from diverse fields, gaining insights into how different roles contribute to the success of a mission. The ability to communicate complex legal ideas clearly to non-legal professionals, while understanding the technical details of a mission, is a critical skill for any lawyer in the space industry.

This interdisciplinary experience enhanced my problem-solving abilities and my adaptability in navigating the legal and technical complexities of space missions. For law students interested in space, this combination of skills is crucial for effectively contributing to space projects that push the boundaries of exploration and innovation.

Why pursue a legal career in space?

Space offers limitless opportunities for legal professionals who are interested in tackling complex global issues. From addressing questions of sovereignty and space mining to ensuring compliance with international treaties, space law is an exciting and evolving field that allows lawyers to work on some of the most innovative and impactful projects of our time.

My interest in space began with international law and governance, but it has since expanded to encompass the technical and scientific aspects of space missions. Programs like the Milo Mission Academy have allowed me to merge my legal expertise with project management and technical knowledge, making me a more effective contributor to space exploration initiatives.

A word to law students interested in space

If you’re a law student with an interest in space, I highly recommend exploring opportunities in space law and related sectors. The space sector is evolving rapidly, and legal professionals are increasingly needed to address challenges ranging from international treaties and space law to corporate compliance and intellectual property rights. Programs like the Milo Mission Academy offer invaluable hands-on experience and mentorship, helping you develop the skills needed to navigate both the legal and technical sides of space exploration. Whether you’re interested in policy, international relations, or corporate law, the space sector offers a growing number of opportunities for legal professionals.

Space is not only the final frontier for explorers, but also for legal professionals looking to contribute to the next wave of technological and societal advancements. The future of space law is bright, and there’s never been a better time for law students to get involved!

Working in the space sector allows me to contribute to projects that push the boundaries of human knowledge, all while addressing key issues like sustainability, equity, and innovation.
